Aaron Wyatt's "Digital Echoes" is a compelling nominee for Chamber Work of the Year, exploring the transformation of sound, messages, and meaning displaced by time and space. Melodic fragments of viola, sent via internet connection to diverse locations across so-called Australia, form the core of this innovative composition. The captured sounds, returned to the performance space and resonating with percussion instruments, create a dynamic and evolving soundscape. The violas echoes, traversing the country and interacting with the live performance, generate unpredictable timings, effectively mapping the unseeable landscapes of our information highways. "Digital Echoes" delves into the complexities of translation, examining what is lost and gained through coding and decoding. As a Noongar, Yamatji, and Wongai man, Aaron Wyatt brings a unique perspective to this work. His expertise as a violist, composer, and software developer, particularly his contributions to JackTrip, are integral to the work's realization. The collaborative partnership with Speak Percussion, fostered by Wyatt's Artist in Residence position, amplifies the work's impact. "Digital Echoes," with its innovative integration of technology and artistic expression, is a significant contribution to the chamber music repertoire and a deserving recipient of the Chamber Work of the Year award.
