Adelaide Chamber Singers - Sustained Contribution to Commissioning and Artistic Excellence

NOMINATION: Luminary - State and Territory

NOMINATION: Luminary - State and Territory

The Luminary Awards seek to honour individuals and organisations who, through sustained contribution (demonstrated over a period 3-5 years prior), have impacted their communities on a state or territory level through visionary leadership, fearless trailblazing, high-level artistic practice, and championing of Australian repertoire. Nominations for individuals should demonstrate a program of activities or a range of projects rather than (for example) the recording and release of a single album. Nominations for a single work or project should be made in the Work of the Year or Excellence categories.

If you believe you are nominated in the wrong category or the details of your nomination to be incorrect, please contact the AMC via email at awards@australianmusiccentre.com.au before proceeding with the nomination.

Nominator Statement
I wish to nominate the Adelaide Chamber Singers for the South Australian Luminary Award, to recognise and celebrate their sustained contribution to artistic excellence in choral singing, their exceptional sound, and their regular commissioning of Australian composers, both recently and throughout their 40-year history. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Christie Anderson, ACS brings together Adelaides finest ensemble singers, many of whom are respected conductors, soloists, and educators. ACS is dedicated to delivering performances that inspire, challenge, and elevate the art of choral singing.
A cornerstone of ACSs success is its robust commissioning program, having commissioned over 30 new works from both emerging and established Australian composers. This commitment to new music has enriched the choral repertoire and positioned ACS as a leading advocate for contemporary Australian composition. They are particularly strong advocates for South Australian composers, having championed voices such as Carl Crossin, Anne Cawrse, and Rachel Bruerville.
Recent highlights include the successful launch of Rising Voices, a training ensemble nurturing future talent, and the inaugural Adelaide Chamber Choir Festival in 2023 - a festival bringing together worldclass choirs from around Australia. ACS continues to enchant audiences with groundbreaking performances, including Anne Cawrses All Flesh is Fire and There Will Come Soft Rain at the Adelaide Festival 2024. ACS will perform as the off-stage choir in Saariaho's opera Innocence at the Adelaide Festival in 2025, and were the choir for Watershed by Joseph Twist, a highlight of the 2022 Adelaide Festival. ACS are the choir of choice for Adelaide and beyond- they can sing pretty much anything! Their commitment towards excellence in music ranges from contemporary opera, sacred and secular song, backing vocals on albums by the likes of Katie Noonan, and fresh Australian works. For these and many other reasons I would like them to be considered for this award.
