Nominator Statement
'The Eyes of the Earth' by Andrew Howes is an exhilarating and deeply imaginative addition to the chamber music repertoire, demonstrating Andrew's exciting compositional voice and creative ingenuity. Premiered in November 2024 at the Lyrebird Festival by the Bowerbird Collective, this concerto intima for saxophone and string quartet is a testament to Andrew's ability to craft music that is both structurally enthralling and emotionally compelling.

At the heart of 'The Eyes of the Earth' is a highly virtuosic, idiomatic and evocative solo saxophone part, masterfully performed by Alice Morgan, for whom the work was written. Throughout the work, Andrew seamlessly intertwines the saxophones expressive possibilities with the textures of the string quartet.

This work deserves recognition for its originality, technical brilliance, and the powerful way it showcases the saxophone within a chamber setting.
