Nominator Statement
Aristeas String Quartet no.1 is a mature and substantial gift to Australian chamber music. Like all of her work, it is simply a combination of the highest musical craft, deep expressivity and keen intellect, making it the best of what music can offer us.
Over the course of three movements, Mellos shows both a reverence for the imposing and impressive legacy of string quartet writing in general, and forges her own way, exploring her own musical style and compositional concerns. It is a work of integrity and quality, and so a piece that I deeply admire.
Inspired by the immediate and palpable climate disaster confronting us, Mellos weaves imaginative, emotional, and creative threads between her subject matter, her musical material, and an intimate understanding of not just the instruments of the string quartet, but the players of the Flinders Quartet, producing an exceptional work of art and music that deserves recognition through the Art Music Awards.
