Nominator Statement
Auckland Philharmonia commissioned a work from me in early 2024 as part of their Kiwi Kapers programme which brings orchestral works to primary school students over two performances in South Auckland on November 12 and then central Auckland on November 13. As this was the first time I have worked in collaboration with the orchestra, and with New Zealand Dance Company, they were incredibly open to my desire to work with Generative AI as part of my creative process. I collaborated with AI and creativity research Rodrigo Cadzi in Santiago, Chile who trained AI on my music then produced a 5 minute work which I then transcribed by ear for orchestra. The process was incredibly taxing and lead to a delay in delivery unit only a month prior. The orchestra were supportive throughout and then delivered and exceptionally committed rehearsal that delivered on the vision of the work. the two performances it delivered were polished, balanced and planted the seed in over 2000 young minds on ways in which new technologies can be harnessed for human creativity. As an Australian born composer to be promoted and supported by such excellence has been rare and I wanted to acknowledge their amazing work with this nomination. The recording they provided me with formed part of a presentation in Hawaii less than a week after premiere.
