Nominator Statement
I wish to nominate Audrey Powne's work "Indigo" for Work of the Year - Jazz. I have known Audrey since we met at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in 2019, and have watched her musicianship grow in leaps and bounds ever since. I believe her to be a leader in both the jazz and creative music communities (both locally and internationally) - a testament to her astonishing artistic drive and ingenuity.
"Indigo" appears as the 5th track on Audrey's widely, critically acclaimed debut album "From the Fire." Whilst not explicitly part of the suite, this track (as well as others throughout the album) encapsulates rich and affecting melodic and harmonic themes which appear as a common thread in this incredible body of work. I have rarely been so affected by an album on its first listen, and "Indigo" was a track that I kept returning to time and time again. Audrey's amazing band shines on this release, enhanced and amplified by her skillful and considered string arrangements - lifting her artistry into a new and exciting era. It is nothing sort of a rich palette of exquisite songwriting.
I feel that "Indigo" is emblematic of the overall excellence of "From the Fire" which was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize, nominated for an ARIA award (Best Jazz Album) and long-listed for Grammy consideration in the "Best Alternative Jazz Album" category. The album also received a 4 star review in Downbeat magazine, noting the masterful control she holds on her main instrument (trumpet) in combination with her powerful vocals, compositional aesthetic, arranging and production - all of which is on display in this track, and across the entire suite.
I believe "Indigo" to be a hugely deserving recipient in this category. It is an example of Audrey's immense strength, creativity and brilliance as a leading jazz artist of the current day.
