Nominator Statement
I am pleased to nominate the Australian Art Orchestras (AAO) performance of "Ringing The Bell Backwards: Redux" at their 30th Anniversary Concert for Performance of the Year: Jazz. Held at Melbourne Recital Centre, the 30th anniversary concert highlighted the ensembles ongoing contribution to Australian improvised music, bringing together musicians from across three generations to perform repertoire from all throughout the history of the organisation and ensemble.
An important facet of the event, Paul Grabowskys Ringing The Bell Backwards was revisited through new arrangements by Eugene Ball, adapting its movements "Spectre of a Rose" and Unregrettable for an updated ensemble and instrumentation, while maintaining the integrity of the original composition. The performance successfully demonstrated the evolution of the AAOs approach while acknowledging its foundations.
For Ringing The Bell Backwards: Redux, Paul Grabowsky joined the ensemble on piano while current Artistic Director Aaron Choulai performed ahead-of-its-time part for live sampler. Original members Scott Tinkler and Adrian Sherriff performed alongside Aviva Endean, Joe Talia, Helen Svoboda, and Sofia Carbonara, with Eugene Ball conducting. Each artist contributed to a cohesive yet buoyant interpretation of the work, allowing for both individual expression and collective synergy.
This performance reinforced the AAOs longstanding position as an "orchestra of individuals, where personal artistic voices intersect within a structured context. The balance between composed material and improvisation reflected this distinctive approach, demonstrating its adaptability and sustained relevance.
Revisiting the first work performed by the Australian Art Orchestra, Ringing The Bell Backwards Redux was a fitting acknowledgement of 30 years of activity while also looking forward. It underscored the ensembles ongoing commitment to creative, improvised music and its capacity to foster artistic development across generations.
This performance was delivered at a significant moment in the AAOs history and stands as testament to its continued impact on Australian jazz and improvised music. For these reasons, I support its nomination for Performance of the Year: Jazz.
