Charlie Chan - Sustained Creative Practice & Innovation

NOMINATION: Luminary - Individual

NOMINATION: Luminary - Individual

The Luminary Awards seek to honour individuals who, through sustained contribution (demonstrated over a period 3-5 years prior), have impacted our community on a national scale through visionary leadership, fearless trailblazing, high-level artistic practice, and championing of Australian repertoire. Nominations for individuals should demonstrate a program of activities or a range of projects rather than (for example) the recording and release of a single album. Nominations for a single work or project should be made in the Work of the Year or Excellence categories.

If you believe you are nominated in the wrong category or the details of your nomination to be incorrect, please contact the AMC via email at awards@australianmusiccentre.com.au before proceeding with the nomination.

Nominator Statement
Charlie Chan is indeed a luminary - they are an inspiring force of nature as a composer, working across multiple disciplines. I believe its time to recognise their achievements after their 40+ years in the creative music-making community.

Charlies achievements:

The Constellation series (Jan 2023-Jan 2024) comprises 52 albums of Charlies solo piano compositions many of them recorded over the past 30 years, but most of them composed, recorded and mastered during the week leading up to each release.

On June 23rd-24th in 2023, Charlie presented Supernova, a marathon 26+hr endurance performance on the Outdoor Stage at HoTA on the Gold Coast setting a world record for the longest improvised piano concert, anywhere, ever, clocking in at 26 hours, 5 minutes and 20 seconds.

Charlie continues to develop ChAI Charlies own AI teaching it to improvise, compose and perform just like they do. ChAI made its world premiere at Supernova in 2023, filling in live for Charlie, so Charlie could have meals and micro-naps during the 26+hr performance.

A passionate industry advocate, in May 2023, Charlie sponsored, produced and presented an acclaimed session at Screen Forever, the annual Screen Producers conference, featuring a ten-piece string orchestra and Australias leading screen composers and producers describing their practice and collaborative process.

During Covid in 2021, Charlie created and streamed Museful Live from their home studio - a series of free, weekly, live, online music and meditation programs, all led by Charlie, to contribute to the health and wellbeing of the wider community during lockdowns.

The same year Charlie Chan was commissioned by renowned conductor Marin Alsop to compose an anthem for the United Nations to draw together all nations in musical harmony for performance by The Global Orchestra.

Charlie works at the intersection of technology & creativity, with ChAI just the latest tool in Charlies compositional & creative arsenal. They operate based on a conviction that creativity is essential to qualify, test, exploit and improve scientific and technological innovations.
