Ciaran Frame - Sustained activities in democratising music

NOMINATION: Luminary - State and Territory

NOMINATION: Luminary - State and Territory

The Luminary Awards seek to honour individuals and organisations who, through sustained contribution (demonstrated over a period 3-5 years prior), have impacted their communities on a state or territory level through visionary leadership, fearless trailblazing, high-level artistic practice, and championing of Australian repertoire. Nominations for individuals should demonstrate a program of activities or a range of projects rather than (for example) the recording and release of a single album. Nominations for a single work or project should be made in the Work of the Year or Excellence categories.

If you believe you are nominated in the wrong category or the details of your nomination to be incorrect, please contact the AMC via email at awards@australianmusiccentre.com.au before proceeding with the nomination.

Nominator Statement
Ciarans practice challenges the boundaries of music-making by proving that music is for everyone, regardless of experience or ability. His work across 2024 is an exemplary of excellence in experimental practice, bringing cutting-edge technology, unconventional compositional techniques and radical inclusivity to music composition. Across four groundbreaking projects, Ciaran has redefined participation in music and deserves recognition for his sustained impact. The works are outlined below to highlight the sustained experimental contribution across 2024.

In You're an Instrument!, Ciaran co-created and toured an interactive kids show across regional Victoria, reaching over 3,500 children across 2024, including 210 specialist school students. The show turns music-making into a playful musical adventure, allowing children to create sound in unexpected ways (including through farts) challenging traditional notions of how music is made and what music can be.

With Heartstrings, a collaboration with BoilOver Performance Ensemble, Ciaran empowered performers with Disability by integrating movement-activated soundscapes into an inclusive theatre production. Premiering at The Bowery Theatre in July 2024, the work uses sounds from performers to create immersive soundscapes, bringing agency to performers and reimagining the relationship between physical theatre and music.

In Concerts of the Future, Ciaran and Rubiks Collective placed audience members at the centre of a chamber ensemble through an interactive VR experience. This project, publicly premiered in June 2024, broke new ground in interactive performance, enabling audiences to co-create music in virtual space and challenging the traditional relationships between performer and listener.

In Time is Just a Thing, an album recorded with Melinda Smith and Alon Ilsar for ABC Classic, Ciaran and the artistic team reimagined the idea of a song cycle through experimental instrumentation and technology. Featuring robotic percussion, a MIDI-controlled Disklavier, and AirSticks (a wireless gestural instrument), the album places Melinda (a performer with Cerebral Palsy) at the forefront of music-making through a wild exploration of textures and rhythms.

Ciarans work across these projects is a testament to his practice and motivation to dismantle barriers to making music, expanding Australian repertoire and democratising music in the process.
