OutHear
Nominator Statement
"Out Hear amplifies the vital and diverse voices in the community offering opportunities to develop, publish and share audio work. It is an invitation for individuals, organisations and the broader community to connect, to listen and be heard.
Mentoring and facilitation is tailored to individuals interests and ambitions. Programs may be in partnership with other organisations or directly with individuals, including NDIS funded participants."
I was priviledged to join Dale for a few sessions he facilitated throughout mid-2024, and was blown away by the sheer creativity facilitated and accessed during his workshops. OutHear is an inclusive and accepting space for people of all backgrounds to be met how they are, and for them to collaboratively express themselves through soundmaking in any way that feels intuitive and emergent. During the sessions that I partook, I witnessed musical expressions such as 'instrument obstacle-courses', experimental soundscapes, community 'soundwalks', and storytelling podcasts come to life.
At the end of the workshop series, Dale hosted an OutHear Listening Party where all participants from the program could gather with each other, their friends, family, and carers to listen to compilations of recordings that had been produced throughout the project; as well as enjoy live performances offered by any participants that felt called to share their expressions live.
The sheer breadth of works that were created throughout the project was amazing to witness and engage with, and felt very much like one of the strongest distillments of humanity's diversity I have had the honour of engaging with.
