Nominator Statement
Over the period 2020 - 2024 Decibel has created some of the most outstanding experimental practice Australia has ever seen. The diversity and range is impressive, as are the statistics - 73 works performed, 40 of these new Australian commissions, 13 unique concert programs, 6 of these overseas, 4 albums, 3 on overseas labels, two ipad apps for reading graphic scores, and a major book. Thier 2020 'COVID' project '2 minutes from home', where they commissioned 21 new works during lockdown, originally to share on social media with innovative film/scores, then as a film, showing in Germany, Canada and the US, then -when it became possible - as a live show across Australia and the UK was a revelation on how to engage with your music community in difficult times. Thier DFAT/ WA Goverment funded tour of the UK in 2022 saw the first Indigenous person conduct on UK soil - with Noogyar man Aaron Wyatt conducting Sariaaho in London; the premiere of a major concerto by Cat Hope with Australian expat orchestra Ruthless Jibaru in London, and a concert dedicated to Hope's music performed by the ensemble in the prestigious Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival that led to the ensemble being broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and concerts and workshops accross 5 UK universities where they showcased Australian work and performing arts innovation. They released thier incredible 2014 show 'After Julia' featuring 8 Australian women composers works, on CD via Australian label Tall Poppies in 2023; the Inland Lake album of French music by Lionel Marchetti on Australian label Room 40 in 2022, a CD of Australian composer/ensemble director Cat Hope's music on Swiss label Hat Hut/Ezzthetics in 2020 and most recently, the mammoth book/CD project on the 8 John Cage 'Variations' works on esteemed New York label MODE, establishing themselves as leading Cage scholars and artists worldwide. Thier Decibel Score Player app continues to have its adption expand worldwide, including on the NSW school curriculum, and the John Cage Variations app for ipad, produced in conjunction with Cage's publisher Peters, is used around the world, most recently by the London Sinfionetta in thier upcoming 2025 program. All this amongst championing new Australian music and remarkable innovative scores at the Melbourne Recital Centre, Revelation Film Festival Perth, Rechabites Hall Perth and the sold out season of 'Twin Peaks Was 30' at the Perth Institute of Contmeproary Arts last year. For a small, project based group accross two Australian state - this is surely luminary!
