For the performance of a single Australian work, showcasing the performer(s)’ success in improvisatory creation or collaboration. This may entail entirely improvised work or significant improvisatory input such as solo passages. A work is defined as a single complete musical composition, or expression. This includes music with movements or sub-works (i.e. song cycles), installations, and real-time compositions (improvised music).

Hamed Sadeghi and Eishan Ensembles By The Mountain is a groundbreaking performance that pushes the boundaries of jazz and improvised music. It embodies artistic excellence, technical mastery, and cross-cultural innovation, offering a deeply moving and genre-defying experience. By The Mountain is supported by Creative Australia and Create NSW and has been inspired by the Australian landscape. It is based on Eastern music and jazz, with strong elements of improvisation.

This performance redefines jazz by authentically integrating Persian classical elements, expanding the genres reach and significance. It challenges traditional classifications, fostering a broader appreciation of jazz as a globally interconnected art form. Critical acclaim and enthusiastic audience responses highlight its importance in contemporary music, inspiring both seasoned jazz enthusiasts and new audiences.

This work has seen performances across Australia and Europe including performances at Brisbane Festival, Perth International Jazz Festival 2024, and London Jazz Festival 2024.
