NOMINATION: Luminary - State and Territory
The Luminary Awards seek to honour individuals and organisations who, through sustained contribution (demonstrated over a period 3-5 years prior), have impacted their communities on a state or territory level through visionary leadership, fearless trailblazing, high-level artistic practice, and championing of Australian repertoire.
Nominations for individuals should demonstrate a program of activities or a range of projects rather than (for example) the recording and release of a single album. Nominations for a single work or project should be made in the Work of the Year or Excellence categories.

Nominator Statement
ABC Young Performer of the Year Eliza Shephard is known for her innovative approach to music, presenting thought-provoking recitals and curated performances, and for being a fierce advocate for gender equality in performance spaces.
In 2020 Eliza Shephard initiated her project March of the Women as a celebration of the music by women. Established as a month-long project, Eliza released a recording of a piece she performed in both solo and chamber settings of female composers music. These recordings were both home-produced and recorded in studios around Victoria and New South Wales.
Through 2021, 2022, and 2023 Eliza repeated this project, collaborating with artists throughout Australia for the daily releases online of a huge variety of music from all genres. With a flute+ focus in essence any music with a flute being included Eliza has generated and shared recordings from works receiving their world premieres, or have not been heard since the premiere, pieces that have no recordings in existence, as well as familiar and well-known tunes.
In 2024 Eliza revamped her project with the goal to extend outreach, extend the celebration beyond the single month, bring the project Australia-wide, and take the project to an international level. March of the Women 2024: Connecting Australia involved Eliza working with 31 Australian female-identifying flute players based both in Australia and internationally to record 31 pieces by Australian female-identifying
composers throughout history. The music was eclectic and reflected the rich and diverse Australian music scene. This approach strengthened Elizas connection to the music makers within Australia and demonstrated the abundance of creatives that have developed unique and explorative careers in music.
Eliza selected the performers with the intention to showcase the huge array of musical talent and career opportunities present in Australia. Musicians ranged from orchestral players to freelancers, Suzuki educators to airforce band performers, Eastern flute specialists to educators, composers, and improvisers of all walks of musical life.
Eliza has toured around Australia promoting March of the Women, presenting workshops and lectures in universities and schools nation-wide. She has developed relationships through her work with the Australian Youth Orchestra and Opera Australia, mentoring the future generation of music makers to envision change and progression in the art scene of Australia.
With no signs of slowing down, March of the Women 2025: Collaboration continues with a series of commissions and ensemble collaborations with venues and radio stations to further enhance March of the Women and this unique celebration of music by women. Eliza has demonstrated leadership and a fierce motivation to celebrate women in music and to showcase the sheer amount of incredible creativity that women throughout history have injected into the world. She is a beacon for inclusivity in the world of Classical music, and highly deserves to be recognised through the APRA AMCOS Luminary Award.
