I believe that Younans work should be nominated for work of the year - large ensemble as it contains not only musical significance but also cultural significance. Commissioned by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra as part of their monumental 50-Fanfares project, Younan composed her work to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Sydney Opera House. According to interviews given by Younan featured on the live broadcast on ABC classic, the work not only musically reflects the immense architectural structures of the building, it also reflects the incredible story of its construction and the common humanity required to build the Opera House. This common humanity is shared and felt by audience members with every performance attended through all walks of life, which Younan has also powerfully captured in her music. She uses exciting and instrumental interplay, featuring large, expansive, and powerful tuttis, to delicate and nuanced contrapuntal writing, which combine to create colourful and contrasting sections. Its pulsating, magnetic energy made it a perfect opening work for a concert which concluded with Stravinskys Rite of Spring. Ultimately, Younan has created an exciting work which is inextricably linked to the place in which it was first performed.
