Crashendo - Leading Note

Nominator Statement
Crashendo has been providing music education in a meaningful and community driven manner at Laverton P-12 for over a decade. Through Erica's ongoing leadership the program has gone from strength to strength, managing to weather storms of funding and school leadership changes and come out ever stronger with financial and organisational resilience.

The kids, love it. The students often stay till year 12, having started in the program in grade 4 or 5. The strength of community between the students is unparalleled. The students are mostly new Australians, born overseas and refugee communities. The program gives the students a safe, non-competitive space to explore and learn and bond.

Full disclosure: i taught at this program for over 10 years. The students I saw through from primary to high school went from being shy and unsure to strong, independent, opinionated, and very good musicians. My contact with the parents of these students support that. They are so grateful to Erica and Crashendo for providing this program for the students, and the local Karen Church is bolstered by hordes of young musicians playing along to the song books. When you look at the posters of student leadership and academic awards around the school. Crashendo students are represented in very high numbers.

Crashendo is the very picture of community in music education. These students love music, the teachers are dedicated, and the whole community benefits. It's independent, its' long lasting, and the real life impacts are real.

These are students who will never go to music camp, (even with scholarships with their family structures its' just not possible) and without Crashendo would possibly never have experienced music beyond the guitar and covers. The program is life changing and deserves recognition. Erica has worked tirelessly behind the scenes gathering funding and support for this program that means so much to so many of us.
