Nominator Statement
Presented by Made Now Music at Brisbanes exploratory venue, KEPK, Anatomical Heart were on fire at this performance. It was a sold out crowd (but still only 40 people in this space) and it was totally the place to be. Erik was on a prepared upright piano - seemingly everyone at once as he tended to sounds on, in, around the piano. Helen was the glue that held the group together, occasionally grinning as the playing pushed and pulled her in unexpected directions. And Chloe was the mistress of sound - patiently playing the long game and breaking out into deep, transformative playing before retreating again.
This was cat and mouse playing. Edge of your seat stuff. There were audible gasps from the audience at times. Totally breathtaking. Gig of the year.
Anatomical Heart brings together musical voices from across the Eastern seaboard - Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne - across generations, to make something fresh and endlessly unexpected. This gig was based on the album released by Earshift featuring 8 new pieces, created during a residency at The Piano Mill. Improvisation is at the forefront, underpinned by the languages of jazz, experimental music, contemporary classical as performers at the top of their game navigate new territory together.
