Nominator Statement
Attending the performance of Fiona Hill's "Momentary, or an infinite series of unfolding moments" by the JACK Quartet was personal highlight for me for 2024 and was very well received by the audience. What struck me most was the sheer physicality of the piece. Fiona Hill masterfully employed gesture as the primary driver of the sonic material, creating a sense of an infinite and pulling the listener into its depths. This spiraling journey, informed by Rumi, Ingold, and the song spirals of the Gay'wu women, transitioned into intricate explorations of insect communication, and evocations of the movement of clouds. The integration of electronics into the live instrumental sound world was very effective and the overall effect was emotionally powerful.
