NOMINATION: Performance of the Year - Notated Composition
For the performance of a single Australian work, showcasing the performer(s)’ success in revealing the nature and intention of a composition with clear notated instructions for the performer. Works with significant improvisatory aspects should instead be submitted for Performance of the Year: Jazz / Improvised Music.
A work is defined as a single complete musical composition, or expression. This includes music with movements or sub-works (i.e. song cycles), installations, and real-time compositions (improvised music).

Garrick Ohlsson is one of the great piano recitalists, and for his June 2023 tour for Musica Viva, Garrick took on a rarity: a brand-new commission. Hobart-based composer Thomas Misson created 'Convocations' especially for Garrick - a technical, impeccably structured and above all thoughtful new work for solo piano. This performance, the world premiere, was one of those performances where all the stars aligned - the right musician, the right composer and the right music. Tom's work fitted immaculately into the program alongside other unassailable greats of the piano repertoire; Garrick's enthusiasm for this new work was palpable. Garrick has since kept 'Convocations' in his repertoire, speaking further to the work's quality. For this showcase of Australian talent performed by one of the world's great pianists, we nominate Garrick for Performance of the Year: Notated Composition.
