Excellence in vocal development in Greater Hobart
Nominator Statement
Hannah May's impact on the Greater Hobart region has seen her create a vibrant and supportive community centered around music education and performance. In 2024, she established a new and physical location in Greater Hobart for her own HM Voice Studio. The studio is a remarkable example of Hannah's arts entrepreneurship and her dedication to vocal development of her area. She has created a nurturing environment that encourages artistic growth and collaboration among local talent in vocal performance, and voice and piano composition.
As the founder of HM Voice Studio, Hannah has cultivated a vibrant hub for vocal excellence, mentoring 40 dedicated students from her space, both physical and online. She conducts regular voice development workshops for up to 25 participants, with 7 workshops having taken place in 2024. Her pedagogical expertise extends beyond her private studio, as she has shared her knowledge with students previously at McKillop College, Mount Carmel College, and Taroona High School, while also serving on the 2024 Hutchins School voice audition panel.
Hannah's studio's reach extends beyond Greater Hobart, with Hannah providing online instruction to interstate students throughout 2024, thereby bridging geographical gaps despite her location in Tasmania, and bringing high-quality vocal education to regional areas. This innovative approach ensures that aspiring vocalists in remote locations have access to expert guidance and mentorship.
Hannah's annual student showcase at the Salamanca Arts Centre has become a highlight of the local cultural calendar, drawing an audience of 140 community members per event including her showcase in 2024. This event not only provides a platform for emerging talent but also strengthens the bonds within the local music scene, inspiring both participants and attendees.
Hannah's commitment to professional development is exemplified by her recent participation in the Voice Summit with renowned vocal coaches Mindy Pack and Dr. Reena Gupta, representing Tasmania as an ANATS bursary recipient in 2024. This dedication to staying at the forefront of vocal pedagogy ensures that her students benefit from the latest advancements in the field.
By organising regular workshops and fostering a sense of local community among her students, Hannah has created a supportive network that extends beyond the studio walls. This collaborative atmosphere has led to numerous artistic partnerships and projects, enriching the cultural landscape of Greater Hobart.
