Nominator Statement
Sdrauligs exquisite command of orchestral writing is very much on display in his latest orchestral offering, Flashout. A highly accomplished work, Flashout celebrates colour contrasts, rhythmic propulsion, and lyrical beauty, pitting opposing material against each other in a nuanced way. Sdrauligs writing demonstrates a deep understanding of the orchestra and functions especially well for the forces of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra an orchestra he has a long-standing relationship with. This is a work worthy of future performances by each of our state orchestras an attention-grabbing opener, filled with drama and nervous energy, with an introspective undercurrent.
The thoughtful orchestration provides a vehicle for contrast throughout, where explosive tuttis suddenly give way to solo lines, and pulsating quavers are overwritten by chromatic lyricism. The opposite is also true, where graduations of colour slowly morph into entirely new textures. This creates a structure that is simultaneously disruptive and in flow, as the work toggles back and forth between a series of contrasting, yet connected, soundworlds. Sdraulig writes in his program note that this effect mirrors the interruptions of everyday events, embracing the opposition between familiarity and disruption: A fire alarm. A creak in the floorboards. Some approaching footsteps. An unexpected gust of wind. This speaks to the immediacy of Sdrauligs work which is superbly balanced with a mature sense of structure and an ear for fresh orchestral colours.
