NOMINATION: Performance of the Year - Jazz / Improvised Music

For the performance of a single Australian work, showcasing the performer(s)’ success in improvisatory creation or collaboration. This may entail entirely improvised work or significant improvisatory input such as solo passages. A work is defined as a single complete musical composition, or expression. This includes music with movements or sub-works (i.e. song cycles), installations, and real-time compositions (improvised music).

Nominator Statement
The performance of Okaerinasai by Hinano Fujisaki, Lauren Tsamouras, Jacques Emery, and Bonnie Stewart as part of their Home Is set was a personal highlight for me at the Cut Paste Play Festival in March 2024. The warmth of Hinano Fujisakis composition really shone through in the performance. The main melody was notated in the festival program for audience members to sing along to. The result was an incredibly intimate and uplifting experience of hearing the quartet weave around the humming of an audience choir that emerged organically.
