'The Indifferent' for soprano, clarinet, harp, double bass is far from indifferent. It is a gorgeous 5-part chamber work setting text by the Australian poet Judith Bishop that shimmers with a wonderful pearlescent beauty that at times reaches a soaring ecstasy. Like many of Jane Stanley's works, it reflects a special attentiveness to hand-crafted details where the music proceeds through contrasts between looping lyrical lines and hocketing calls and responses. A review in The Guardian says: 'Perhaps the most immediate work is The Indifferent, a new song cycle. Written for The Hermes Experiment, it uses the ensembles distinctive lineup clarinet, harp and double bass, with Héloïse Werners open, direct soprano on top to create a seashore meditation in which Judith Bishops words interact with a vivid sonic suggestion of the wide sky and the push and pull of the waves.' This is a truly compelling work that deserves to be recognised with an Art Music Award.
