Nominator Statement
Offbeat Collective is an artist-run organisation that has redefined artist development and community-led music initiatives in Australia. Founded by Jannah Beth and Drew Bisset, Offbeat has built a sustainable and inclusive music ecosystem, providing accessible recording spaces, artist mentorship, and career-building opportunities for emerging musicians. Since its establishment in 2021, Offbeat has been driven by a deep commitment to ensuring that artists, particularly those from marginalised communities, have the tools, networks, and resources to navigate the industry on their own terms.
Over the past five years, Offbeat has provided extensive free studio time to women, trans, and non-binary artists, directly addressing one of the biggest barriers to entry in music. By creating a welcoming and professional space for artists to develop their craft, Offbeat has helped foster a new wave of talent that might otherwise be excluded from the industry.
Offbeats writing camp ONE OFF TRAKS, an all-female, trans, and non-binary songwriting camp that provides a space for collaboration, mentorship, and industry connection. The camp has played a vital role in developing and amplifying new Australian repertoire, leading to high-profile releases, industry mentorships, and international recognition. This initiative, Offbeat has created lasting pathways for underrepresented artists, fostering long-term development and strengthening diversity in the Australian music landscape.
Offbeat also runs Up Next, an artist development program that provides structured support to musicians through career guidance, release planning, and mentorship. By investing in artist development beyond a single release cycle, Offbeat ensures artists have the foundation to build sustainable careers.
Beyond providing space and development programs, Offbeat actively advocates for artists within the broader industry. As an ARIA Board Observer, Jannah Beth has used her position to ensure independent artists remain part of critical industry conversations. Offbeat is also involved in the Creative Land Trust Peer Advisory Group, working towards securing permanent creative spaces for artists. These efforts reflect Offbeats mission, not only to support artists creatively but to help reshape structural barriers that prevent them from thriving.
Running Offbeat has required immense personal sacrifice, passion, and artist-first mentality. Jannah and Drew have often worked unpaid, reinvesting every dollar earned back into the community to keep the space running and artists supported. Their commitment goes beyond business, it is a labour of love built on the belief that music should be accessible, sustainable, and community-driven.
On a personal level, Offbeat made my debut album possible. The support I received, through studio access and their belief in my artistry, was life-changing. Creating opportunities for artists who would otherwise struggle to realise their creative vision. Their work is essential and transformative, and I have seen firsthand the deep impact they have on Australian music.
Offbeats influence is reshaping how artist-led organisations operate, proving that grassroots, community-driven initiatives create lasting change and is a worthy recipient.
