Nominator Statement
Jeremy Rose is a prolific and genre-defying composer whose is regularly recognised nationally and internationally for his wide breadth of work, gift for vibrant melody and musical curiosity. Jeremy is a tireless advocate for jazz through his label Earshift Music, having released over 100 albums since 2009 and continually championing the next generation of Australian jazz.
In 2024, Jeremy released Discordia, a commanding nine-part extended work for his 17-piece Earshift Orchestra, an enthralling reflection on contemporary life through sophisticated large ensemble composition. Despite hearing a range of influences including Gil Evans and Bob Brookmeyer, this is music that feels alive, with a completely original approach to the traditional big band sound.
The ensemble features a lineup of some of Australias most exciting new generation of jazz artists, including Chloe Kim (drums), Tom Avgenicos (trumpet), Michael Avgenicos (saxophone), bassist Jacques Emery, pianist Novak Manojlovic, saxophonist Tessie Overmeyer and guitarist Hilary Geddes.
The work is innovative in the way it expands the big band idiom, employing a range of techniques not typically used. These include the use of digital graphic scores, juxtaposition of traditional notation with aleatoric figures and liberating melodies and rhythm from meter. The work represents an important contribution to Australian jazz and improvised music.
I nominate the composition, Loudspeaker, from the album. The work captures a highly sophisticated melody that builds on a blues form in new and unexpected ways. In particular, the piece borrows from traditional Korean drumming through its use of quintuple meter, creating a distinctive, uneven rhythm that adds a unique texture and complexity to the music. The improvised solos and ensemble performance raise Jeremys composition to new heights.
Following the album launch, Rose was profiled in the Sydney Morning Heralds Spectrum Magazine, highlighting his passion to collaborate, a commitment to connecting audiences and a belief in the power of community, describing him as transforming the Australian contemporary jazz scene.
"This extraordinary album deserves as many accolades as possible Roses music is anything but standard () a compelling vision as to how the big band of the future will sound. Many dense soundscapes here are full of majesty, and out of those soundscapes emerge some of the most individual voices in Australian jazz
5 stars, The Australian
"Rose works with compositions and arrangements that allow the pieces to breathe - he uses the big band for punctuation and dramatic impact, juxtaposing more intimate moments against the full-fledged orchestral power of all the players.
All Music, US
Jeremy Rose is a composer and arranger who successfully comments on the world around him (with his), tough, fierce and deeply personal music.
Nettavisen, Norway.
The writing is consistently ear-catching, even when it takes the form of a tone poem like Floating Just Beyond Reach, with its shimmering pads of horns and burbling sections that invite you to see things with your heart.
