Nominator Statement
As Australia's only all-asian instrumental jazz ensemble, the work that Zodiac is undertaking to chronicle the Asian-Australian cultural experience is important in celebrating Australia's cultural diversity and the cultural exchange between Australia and East Asia.
Not only is the creative rationale behind Gratitude (and Wild Wild East as a whole) culturally significant, the calibre of musicianship demonstrated is world class, with beautiful sensitive playing from Hinano Fujisaki (tnr), Sabine Tapia (Bs), Manson Luk (Drm), and bandleader Jordan Chung (Piano).
Chung's composition also deserves great merit, with the piece embracing space, allowing a beautiful bass solo from young rising star Tapia and an emotional build powered by the interplay between the bands rhythm section, accentuated by a layer soulful saxophone played by Fujisaki.
Almost trancelike, Gratitude draws the listener into Chung's deep sense of appreciation for his family, friends and the opportunities afforded to him in his life and musical career.
Zodiac is a fantastic musical project driven by a strong creative and cultural vision, and provides a fantastic vehicle for storytelling of the Australian music scene's diversity, and such should be commended.
