Nominator Statement
Laura Chislett gave an absolutely committed and compelling performance of Keyna Wilkins' "The Old Window" as part of a special concert at the Sydney Conservatorium that celebrated 100 years of works for the flute by Australian women. A long time champion of contemporary Australian composition, in this performance, Chislett seamlessly transitioned from spoken word to playing. The difficult and painful subject matter of the composition (the incarceration of refugees seeking asylum on Australian soil) was conveyed with poignancy and deep empathy. It was a moving and thought provoking performance in a concert that truly displayed Chislett's artistic diversity and technical capacity as a performer.

Background information:
The Old Window is a flute and spoken word piece based on text by Mohammad Ali Maleki and composed especially for Laura Chislett. Mohammad is an Iranian refugee who was imprisoned by the Australian government for 9 years without trial or charge, for arriving by boat and seeking protection. This included 6 years on the notorious Manus Island prison camp. Mohammad has written extensively about his experiences in detention and his poetry is published by Verity La, Rochford Press.
