Nominator Statement
Laurence Pike's ambitious composition 'the Undreamt-of Centre' combines choir, electronics and drumkit to remarkable effect. It is a first-of-its kind endeavour, centering the language of improvisation within the framework of choral requiem. With the added layer of synthesiser and samples to add ambiguity and tone colour to the relationships, the composition itself is a complex, layered and demanding one.

On record, the result is a finely crafted statement, piquing our constant attention. Live its another thing entirely.

I am nominating the live performance of The Undreamt-of Centre, at Phoenix Central Park as the jazz and improvised music performance of the year for three reasons:, One: the unique combination of Vox Sydney Philharmonia Choir, with Elizabeth Scott conducting provided a potent, disciplined and otherworldly sonic environment for Laurences improvisations.

Two: His playing within this piece combines total focus, attention to microscopic detail, freedom within a very constrained and clear form and the ability to create a moving, emotionally dynamic narrative with the drumkit.

Three: This masterful performance is worthy of the recognition of his peers and the wider community as a benchmark in realising ambitious goals, with quite unbelievable skill.
