Nominator Statement
Laurence Pike's ambitious composition 'the Undreamt-of Centre' combines choir, electronics and drumkit to remarkable effect. It is a first-of-its kind endeavour, centring the language of improvisation within the framework of choral requiem.

It is my opinion that a work of the year has the responsibility to reflect the times, engage the craft, and widen the parameters of the form. With this in mind I want to nominate this remarkable composition for this esteemed award in the Choral category.

This piece is a masterful piece of contemporary composition, creating relationships that rarely exist, performed with stunning power and grace.

Vox Sydney Philharmonia Choir, under the direction of Sam Lipman, creates a sonic environment in which individual voices rise up to meet drums, synthesizers and samples bringing a wordless narrative that ebbs and flows drawing our attention and setting markers along the road.

They excel in their reading of the work, providing an almost mythical atmosphere, which time and time again transfixes and focusses the rush of drums at its heart.

Ive never heard another choral work like it for bravery, innovation and masterful execution it deserves to be heard and recognised.
