Lake is a well written work that is beautiful and a little weird. Knowing Leah's practice as a composer and performer, it feels like a great combination of her sound art and improvisors voice along with her composition language in a way that it still feels authentic to what she would like to put into the world as a creative. She's really experimenting with ideas that don't feel immediately natural for singers, but they're made possible by segments of melody and good voice leading to be more comfortable. You can hear the exceptional beauty in its overarching themes presented through Claire Nashar's family story. So much of what Claire writes is about life cycles, so I really appreciate that Leah wanted 'Lake' to be the next iteration in the lifecycle of this work, rather than a retelling.
