Nominator Statement
This suite is a fabulous representation of new brass quintet music in Australia.
Opening from a single point and emerging into bold chords, then quickly destabilised again by fast interlocking patterns. Seamless, dovetailing, dynamic lines of the miniature III effortlessly flow. Trewartha demonstrates a deep understanding of the instruments and the brass quintet ensemble. The dynamic double tonging and glissandi in IV are of particular note, moving to luscious lines and closer harmonies in V. The topic of the flooding in Trewarthas rural hometown of Castlemaine is poignant and artfully portrayed in this Suite and should be recognised.
As a side, as a female of the LGBT+ community, Trewartha represents a minority of the genre. It's wonderful to see ABC Classic commission work from such a talented composer and trumpet player who can also represent so many others in her field that are yet to be seen.
Additional nominator statement:
This nomination expresses my support of new music for chamber brass created by an Australian woman, of which there is a real shortage. To have performers who are predominantly female and/or LGBT+ is also unheard of in this field. Trewartha has created a unique work for brass quintet that draws attention to the specific connections we have with water living on this continent. On a personal level as TSO principal tubist 1995-2023 I would like to express my appreciation of this very fine piece. I have played many brass quintets over the years. I find this piece most pleasing to listen to and I am keen to get a chance to perform it. I believe it to be one of the best pieces writeen by an Australian for brass.
