SHE SONGWRITING RETREATS
Nominator Statement
Lyn Bowtells musical journey began in the Country Music Clubs of the Darling Downs and has led her to stages all over Australia and around the world.
Lyn Bowtell is a Toyota Star Maker winner, MO Award winner, APRA Song of The Year finalist, ten-time Golden Guitar winner and 2022 Tamworth Hands of Fame Inductee.
Lyn has also had a long and positive involvement with The Australian Country Music Academy, from her time as a former student through to her many years as Artistic Director, the role she has been in since 2015.
Her dedication to educating students at the Academy from 5 to 11 (Junior Academy) and Senior Academy has been recognised with the success of students who have gone on to have successful musical careers.
This education has continued with her development of SHE Songwriting Retreats for women aged 17 upwards.
SHE Songwriting Retreats commenced in 2023 and are held in NSW, Victoria and Queensland at present. There have been 10 retreats held since that time with another 5 planned for this year.
They are a unique and empowering space where women come together to create, connect & grow as artists. More than just a retreat, SHE is a community that nurtures creativity, collaboration & confidence in a safe, inspiring environment.
Participants pay for accommodation, materials and tutors to attend 34-day residential songwriting retreat. From beginners to seasoned performers, all come together and with the expertise and experience of Lyn Bowtell as the Co-ordinator and other experienced tutors, the quality of songs written has led to many being recorded and to the careers of some participants being launched as songwriters and existing artists being given tools to make their participation in the industry easier to work through.
Each retreat has around 13 women participate. From these retreats I have personally had three songs recorded, many cowrites that are being performed, which without the SHE Retreats would never have occurred.
The attendees are a mix of artists performing and recording, beginners who want to take their music to the next level but dont have the skills, and others, who are songwriters but dont have the connections for songs to be performed/recorded. SHE Retreats provide the opportunity for this to happen.
Each retreat has around 50 new songs written over the course of the three days. Each one written with either direct input from Lyn Bowtell and the other tutors, or feedback and suggestions as they are performed at the end of each day. Always encouraging but at the same time constructive comments made where needed so that the songwriters can benefit from the expertise of such a highly regarding songwriter.
The Retreats also cover many other facets of the industry such as performing rights, marketing, performing and pitfalls of the industry.
The process that Lyn Bowtell provides gives tools that make a difference to the songwriting process which can only come from years of experience.
The Award for Excellence in Music Education would be an opportunity for the industry to acknowledge the work of Lyn Bowtell in giving women in the SHE Retreats the opportunity to grow and succeed.
