Nominator Statement
This production "The Cut" by Mark Ravenhill reimagined the play through a queer femme lens performing the plays for the first time with an entirely female cast. As such Marlene was tasked with composing a new opening sequence for the play to contextualise the new creative and directorial vision of the play. As such they created a unique soundscape using the voices of voice over artist and punk musician from Glitoris, Alice Cottee in combination with voice overs from two actors in the play, Maxine Beaumont and Diana Caban Velez. This unique soundscape contextualises the play and serves to elevate the political nuances being discussed within the play itself, highlighting gender and racial dynamics as well as the erosion of women and trans rights and access to bodily autonomy and safety under neoliberal governing structures. This provocative play immerses audiences in a dystopian society where a mysterious procedure, known only as "the cut," promises salvation at a significant moral cost. The play explores themes of power, control, and the ethical compromises individuals and societies are willing to make for a sense of security and order. As the narrative unfolds, characters grapple with their roles in a regime that uses "the cut" to maintain dominance, raising questions about personal responsibility and collective morality. The production features an all-female cast, a daring decision that infuses Ravenhill's narrative with a fresh and compelling perspective. The play features an innovative sound design by Marlene Radice. Founded by Canberra entrepreneurs Sammy Moynihan and Marlene Radice, The Seeing Place is dedicated to creating bold, political theatre inspired by Ancient Greek traditions and the philosophies of Augusto Boal. The founding of this company is a natural extension of their decade-long collaborative artistic relationship.
