Mick Dick - Wish You Were Here no1

NOMINATION: Work of the Year - Electroacoustic / Sound Art

NOMINATION: Work of the Year - Electroacoustic / Sound Art

The Electroacoustic / Sound Art category is for works which utilise and manipulate digital and/or analogue sound as the primary medium. The work may be interdisciplinary (incorporating more than one media). It may include, but is not limited to; sonic art, electronics, interactive work, generative music, environmental sound, installations, soundscapes, electroacoustic music, and intermedia works. A work is defined as a single complete musical composition, or expression. This includes music with movements or sub-works (i.e. song cycles), installations, and real-time compositions (improvised music).

If you believe your work to be nominated in the wrong category or the details of your nomination to be incorrect, please contact the AMC via email at awards@australianmusiccentre.com.au before proceeding with the nomination.

Nominator Statement
I would like to nominate Mick Dick, who is known for his innovative approach to sound design, using a custom made one string bass and manipulating it through various analogue and digital devices, creating a sub harmonic chasm that alters and transforms the listener. His early work in the eighties with experimental outfits such as HAZCHEM and his solo double bass works for the Melbourne Improvisers Association played a pivotal role in developing Mick's approach to sound. Currently Mick and I are members in YOYETTA, a fully improvised group who have recorded four albums to date, and also works with me in the KNIE Kollective Northern Improvisers Ensemble. Mick is in collaboration with visual artist Kellie O'Dempsey doing fascinating and immersive sound designs for live drawing performances and installation works including National Gallery of Australia, Biennale of Sydney, Museum of Brisbane, Botanica Brisbane and White Nights Melbourne.

This piece titled Wish you were here no1 was an installation sound design which accompanied Kellies projection and collage exhibition at Redland Bay Gallery 2024. Recorded live, It is an example of Micks minimal yet expansive sound design, taking the listener and the audience into new realms of reality through manual manipulation of analogue delay and reverb. Through this colourful and absurd palette of subtlety and wonder Mick allows the moment to create narrative through vibration and resonance. This is my rationale for nominating Mick Dick and wish you were here no 1.
