Music in the Regions

Nominator Statement
Taken from their website - Music in the Region's mission statement reads as such - Music in the Regions has a simple mandate: to provide high quality classical music to audiences hungry for rich cultural experiences across regional New South Wales. From small ensembles to chamber orchestras, familiar names to emerging talents - this is the time for a different sort of rhythm. Regional audiences are seeking creativity. Musicians are craving new experiences. Communities are looking for new ways to connect. Now, through the partnership of Music in the Regions, the opportunity is here to forge relationships across thousands of kilometres through the power of music.

As a featured touring artist in their 2024 season, I can attest that this organisation does excellent work. I toured an all-Australian program, one which might make metropolitan presenters nervous about ticket sales. Unafraid to critically engage and creatively challenge regional audiences, MitR embraced a position of celebrating deeply engaged listening. Patrons at the well-attended events were excited that their towns were hosting concerts, but also celebrated in the listening of unknown (often challenging) works. Many conversations with patrons after concerts displayed a clear sense of critical and curious listening. It was a joy (and was deeply refreshing) to see such an engagement with contemporary Australian work.

In 2024 MitR toured a number of leading Australian artists to a staggering amount of towns across regional NSW. In addition to the multiple concerts presented, there are a number of community activities and masterclasses which MitR present (often in partnership with regional Conservatorium's).

Going well beyond their mission statement of providing 'rich cultural experiences' across regional NSW, the organisation vibrantly contributes to the creative fabric of the regions - supporting and inspiring youths and communities in places where there is less regular access to live events.

Continuing their meaningful contributive work in 2025, MitR is well deserving of prestigious recognition via this award.
