Musica Viva Australia - Accessible Music Education Program
Nominator Statement
Musica Viva Australia (MVA) is one of Australias largest and most trusted providers of music education in schools. MVAs Education program brings the social and educational benefits of a quality music education to students and teachers across the country.
In 2024, MVA developed its first Access, Equity, and Inclusion plan, which outlines the companys commitment to increase access to music for audiences with disability of all ages. This embeds the strategic importance of this work in the organisation and builds upon steps taken in the Education program to supports students with disability.
With the support of access and inclusion specialists, MVA has made adaptations to Education programs to make them accessible to students with disability, who have diverse learning and access needs.
MVAs initiatives to support students with disability include:
- Mentoring Musica Viva Australia In Schools (MVAIS) musicians with specialist training to adapt performances to accommodate diverse learning and access needs.
- Trial performances in specialist schools to further consolidate experiential learning for our musicians and provide an important opportunity for student feedback on MVAIS shows during the development phase.
- Accessible resources for teachers and students to complement MVAIS performances, including the provision of detailed Visual Stories to support teachers and students to prepare for performances.
- Presentation of accredited online and face to face Professional Development for generalist and specialist teachers to improve understanding of inclusivity and diverse learning and access needs in the classroom.
- Multi-year capacity building Music Education Residency program delivered at Furlong Park School for Deaf Children (VIC) since 2014.
These initiatives have enabled MVA to build capacity and develop best practice in this area. Importantly, adaptations to the Education program enable MVA to support students with disability to enjoy quality musical experiences in the safety of their school environment.
In the Education program, MVA currently offers year-round engagement and support to teachers through a combination of live and digital delivery. MVAIS celebrates Australian music and musicians by developing culturally and musically diverse ensembles to deliver an extensive performance program to metropolitan, regional/ remote and specialist schools for students with disability.
