Nominator Statement
Nats work Kindling was commissioned by Grigoryan Brothers and released on their new album Amistad. I love the way you can hear the tonal, minimalistic lyricism that is synonymous with a lot of Nats music, but in this work for 2 guitars, it is a fresh perspective and showcases the dynamic artistry of Slava and Leonard.
Nat writes her pieces often in respond to universal themes, that connect with a broad audience. In Kindling, she writes about the experience of carer burnout: Fast-paced rippling notes akin to the sounds a fire in its infancy as the kindling begins to burn. The middle of the piece represents the kindling having burnt through and the slow-growing larger pieces of fuel that take over. Upon reflection, this work is a representation of my experience at the time of carer burnout; using up all your energy and resources too soon.
Nat went on to record Part II of the work on her album Forever Changed, for solo piano with ambient effects, integrating the story behind the music into a broader narrative about the discovery of her own autistic/ADHD identity.
