Nominator Statement
Opera Australias performance of Brett Deans Hamlet at the Sydney Opera House was nothing short of sensational. With an Australian and international cast led by the unique artistry of English tenor Allan Clayton, and directed with great humanity and insight by Australian theatre legend Neil Armfield, this performance was opera at its highest level. Under the inspired direction of conductor Timothy Anderson, the AOBO tackled the complex and challenging score with total precision and even a hard-won joy. Similarly, the soloists engaged with and brought life to their roles with utter conviction and the OA chorus breathed intense and magical life into the big ensemble scenes.
This was a gripping and unforgettable performance that left the audience utterly mesmerised. It was an experience that explains why this production has been picked up by major opera houses around the world.
