Nominator Statement
Ive known Quentin Angus for over a decade, first playing alongside him in the house band for the 2014 National Jazz Awards, where he was a finalist on guitar. We later toured together across Australia in 2022 for the release of his album The State of Things, performing at major venues, including a sold-out show at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. Quentins commitment to pushing jazz composition forward has been evident in every project he takes on.

His piece Ethereal, commissioned for drummer Dušan Kranjc (2Cellos) and released by SONY Japan in 2024, is yet another example of his ability to craft sophisticated and expressive compositions. He was chosen for this project because of his proven track record writing for world-class drummers like Nate Smith and Ari Hoenig, and Ethereal is a natural continuation of that legacy.

Beyond its rhythmic and harmonic depth, Ethereal stands out for its striking melodic strength. The piece weaves an emotive, memorable theme that lingers with the listener, showcasing Quentins ability to blend technical mastery with genuine artistry. His work continues to shape the landscape of contemporary jazz, and Ethereal is a great example of some of his most recent works.
