Nominator Statement
I would like to nominate Robert McIntyres Remnants of a Resonance for flute and bassoon duo for Work of the Year: Chamber Music, as it is an extraordinary and thought-provoking exploration of sonic loss, environmental crisis, and the fragility of the Earths auditory ecosystem. Through the unique and under-used instrumental pairing of flute and bassoon, McIntyre crafts an effective and impactful evolving narrative, coupled by his impressive compositional voice, sense of flow, atmosphere and technique.
Remnants of a Resonance hauntingly expresses the loss of sonic diversity, reflecting how these shifts are slowly severing our connection to the Earth through a delicate balance of registral, timbral, and articulative nuances. McIntyre treats the flute and bassoon not just as instruments, but as vessels to embody the evolving narrative of a world in fluxfrom the initial unity of the natural world, to the urgent present day realities, into final fragmented silence left in the wake of ecological destruction.
Further, the duos distinct timbresranging from the flutes bright, breathy and ethereal qualities to the bassoons darker, stronger, sometimes fragile, and resonant tonesare expertly juxtaposed and woven together.
Remnants of a Resonance is a powerful and evocative piece that not only showcases Robert remarkable ability to push the expressive boundaries of this chamber duo, but also serves as a poignant reminder of the irreversible consequences of environmental neglect. For its originality, emotional depth, and thematic relevance, this work is an outstanding candidate for the Chamber Music Work of the Year Award.
