NOMINATION: Work of the Year - Electroacoustic / Sound Art

The Electroacoustic / Sound Art category is for works which utilise and manipulate digital and/or analogue sound as the primary medium. The work may be interdisciplinary (incorporating more than one media). It may include, but is not limited to; sonic art, electronics, interactive work, generative music, environmental sound, installations, soundscapes, electroacoustic music, and intermedia works. A work is defined as a single complete musical composition, or expression. This includes music with movements or sub-works (i.e. song cycles), installations, and real-time compositions (improvised music).

If you believe your work to be nominated in the wrong category or the details of your nomination to be incorrect, please contact the AMC via email at awards@australianmusiccentre.com.au before proceeding with the nomination.

Nominator Statement
I would like to nominate Sophie Roses 'To Echoes and Lines' for Work of the Year: Electroacoustic/Sound Art. I saw the work performed multiple times on 'Homophonic!', at La Mama Courthouse (Melbourne, VIC), 9-11 February 2024. 'To Echoes and Lines' is the most engaging, thoughtful, effective work for a performer and live electronics I have heard in many years. It is an electro-acoustic work imbued with a personal, human element. These qualities set this work apart from others in the genre. To Echoes and Lines is an emotionally vulnerable work, personal, and captivating.

Soprano, Judith Dodsworth, wearing a motion-sensitive cuff that controlled the processing of the vocal lines she sang, brought both the composed vocalizations and the electroacoustic elements to life. The processed material didnt merely reiterate the vocal lines, but it de- and re-constructed them, creating a setting, as it were, within which the vocalist performs. The range of textures and sentiments present in the work were wide-ranging and poignant, always speaking to the singers state of mind, a significant achievement given the element of indeterminacy present in the live electronics.

The concept won the composer, Sophie Rose, the 2024 Homophonic! Pride Prize commission and the realization of the work more than justifies that conferral and, in this persons view, this nomination.
