Nominator Statement
Sound the Alarm is a large ensemble improvisation for 17 musicians, built on a through-composed foundation something rare and incredibly challenging to achieve. By bringing together a cohort of some of Australias finest improvising musicians, jazz composers and classical instrumentalists, Clayton Thomas has been able to construct a work of dynamism and beauty.
Aesthetically, it moves between delicate interplay to rhythmic blocks, solo passages, and solid walls of sound.
Created as a community response to the horror being experienced in Gaza, this work allows the musicians to interpret and innovate within the structure of the piece, creating something that lives and breathes in performance.
I want to nominate this as the Jazz/Improvised performance of the year because it is a distinct expression of this moment, with a vision greater than just the craft. Music to help us experience a story in sound, and move us to be better through shared respect. A work of purpose and ideals that reaches to the heart of improvised music making and the community that creates it.
