Nominator Statement
Spectra Jazz Orchestra is a highly successful and important education program that is supporting the next generation of musicians. Directed by leading composer and performer Ellen Kirkwood, the ensemble supports young women and gender diverse musicians aged 15-23 interested in pursuing jazz, honing their improvisation skills and looking for experience playing in a large ensemble. Spectra Jazz Orchestra has been a significant 'launchpad' and education experience for a plethora of emerging, creative musicians in Sydney. Spectra fosters a supportive, connected environment that creates meaningful pathways into Australia's music ecosystem for all involved. Importantly, Spectra champions Australian jazz and improvised music. The ensemble performs and workshops Australian compositions in a variety of jazz styles, providing members the opportunity to work directly with emerging and established composers.
