Nominator Statement
Synergy Percussion deserves to be considered for the Performance of the Year Award for their extraordinary live performance of Alanbiq (1977) by Moya Henderson. This virtuosic and demanding work requires bespoke instrumentsthe treble and bass Alembadesigned and invented by Henderson whilst an artist in residence at CSIRO in 1983.

Originally composed in 1977 for Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Alanbiq was re-composed in 1985 specifically for Synergy Percussion. In this performance, Synergy Percussion not only showcased their technical brilliance but also breathed new life into a significant yet rarely heard Australian work. By reviving the Alemba, an instrument that has spent decades in a museum collection, they reconnected Alanbiq with a live, contemporary audience, sharing an important Australian musical innovation.

This electrifying performance reaffirmed Synergy Percussions role as a champion of contemporary music and a vital force in keeping Australias musical heritage alive.
