The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra has listed in its Strategic Plan the audacious goal of reaching every Tasmanian child through live performance by the time they have finished primary school. Tasmania has a number of fantastic music educators, but it also has a number of schools, particularly primary schools, who do not have access to professionally trained music educators. In order to seek to raise the level of music education happening in schools and backed by the support of its musicians and donors, the TSO embarked on a series of regional "runouts" performing a range of curriculum linked programs in a range of primary schools all across the state. The outreach in 2024 alone was 12,500 primary school students, a number that they hope to eclipse in 2025. As well as providing the opportunity to see orchestral musicians perform live, the Artistic Development team, Kim Waldock and Jack Machin, produced a series of free teaching resources that were shared with Tasmanian schools and written such that generalist classroom teachers could teach the Australian Curriculum for music, championing the work of local and national composers.
