Cut Paste Play 2024

Nominator Statement
In 2024, The Music Box Project (TMBP) presented their inaugural festival of creative music Cut Paste Play at Church Street Studios. The festival was a celebration of collaborative and exploratory performance and featured over 25 artists from across Australia and abroad. This ambitious project provided artists an invaluable platform to share truly new, exciting and experimental work. Curated by TMBP, the event lineup consisted of Ossicle Duo, Anna Koch, Clocks and Clouds, Clocked Out, Sumn Conduit, Hinano Fujisaki, Laura Chislett, Satsuki Odamura, Hamed Sadeghi, Jane Aubourg, Anita Johnson, Isabella Rahme, Stephen Adams, Amanda Cole, Naomi Johnson, James Eccles alongside the music box project. Each performance featured new Australian music across diverse experimental practices.

Additionally, TMBP created an overall festival experience that was fresh and experimental in nature. Cut Paste Play consisted of 13 concerts and 10 interludes. The format of interludes varied from interactive experience, artist talks, curated party playlist of Australian Art Music by Cameron Lam, DIY compositions to a guided sound walk around the locale. Exemplifying TMBPs commitment to the next generation, the festival featured a newly commissioned installation by emerging composer Isabella Rahme (the recipient of the 2024 Cut Paste Play commission).

Overall, the music box project should be considered for the Excellence in Experimental Practice award as through Cut Paste Play 2024 they have championed and facilitated a much needed platform for experimental music practice in Australia.
