Normanby Creative Bootcamp

Nominator Statement
Topology has been offering Creative Bootcamps for over two decades which are delivered by artists proficient across diverse genres and disciplines. Highly adaptive and experts in the collaborative process, Topology artists and tutors cultivate an open and safe environment conducive to learning, creative expression, collaboration and experimentation.

In July 2024 Topology collaborated with The Harrigans of Normanby Aboriginal Corporation and Black Image band to deliver the inaugural On-Country Creative Bootcamp at Normanby Station on Balnggarrawarra Country, north-west of Cooktown for young people to mentor them through the process of developing and recording new work, with a focus on increasing their confidence to perform before live audiences.

This Creative Bootcamp was developed alongside extensive consultation with The Harrigans focusing on outcomes like growth in the First Nations music industry in the Cape York region with an increase in local skills and experience through increased opportunities to perform, increased confidence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musicians to produce and deliver their own performances and reach their full potential and increased skills to be able to engage in personal storytelling

The Delivery of the Normanby On-country Creative Boot Camp provided opportunities for 9 young people from Cooktown State School, Herberton State School and Atherton State High School to create original works. Over 5 days participants created 12 new works covering difficult topics from substance abuse to the end of life of family members and historical massacres of indigenous people throughout the region by native mounted police. The Bootcamp performance allowed participants to perform their compositions to family, friends, counsellors and school staff.

This project is a perfect example of the exceptional contributions Topology continues to make in Australian music education and it is more than deserving of an APRA/AMCOS Art Music Award.
