Nominator Statement
I would like to nominate "Tapestry" by Vazesh for the Performance of the Year at the Art Music Awards. This extraordinary recording captures a live performance featuring the collaborative talents of Iranian tar player Hamed Sadeghi, Australian saxophonist and bass clarinetist Jeremy Rose, and bassist Lloyd Swanton.
Recorded during a single live concert at Annandale Creative Arts Centre, "Tapestry" beautifully merges Persian classical music with modern improvisational techniques. The intuitive interplay creates a captivating and unique listening experience. Their seamless mix of diverse musical traditions into an authentic musical whole is a perfect model of economy that allows each player to shine. There is an acute spacing and control throughout, with intricately woven subtleties and surprises.
The album has been internationally acclaimed, including "compelling from start to end" (5 stars, Album of the month, Mojo Magazine) and "drop-dead beautiful (Best of Bandcamp, Nov 24), praising its ability to blend intricate musical textures with accessibility. The synergy between Sadeghi, Rose, and Swanton shines, making each track a testament to their collective artistry.
This nomination not only celebrates the artistic achievements demonstrated in "Tapestry" but also acknowledges its cultural impact. By bridging different musical heritages, Vazesh has crafted a performance that stands as a landmark in cross-cultural musical dialogue. Their work exemplifies the power of music to connect disparate traditions, making "Tapestry" a deserving contender for Performance of the Year.
Its a beautiful and unclassifiable record. Richard Williams, The Blue Moment UK
